In September, Ashley Knowles, known to cryptic crossword afficionados as The Guardian’s setter, Boatman published a new collection of puzzles titled Boatman, the second fifty.
Just like his first book (Boatman, the first 50), the second collection offers not only the puzzles themselves but also the stories that went into creating these puzzles, additional clue ideas that were on his drawing board, comments from solvers and so on. This book also has 5 extra puzzles including the Referendum puzzle (a Schrodinger puzzle) which is one of the very few puzzles of its kind to have been published in print.
I got these books as early birthday presents, with personalized messages from Boatman.
I took them with me on my summer holiday to Japan. Pictures of the books in the Shinkansen (Bullet train) and on Mount Fuji on a cloudy day, will serve as reminders of the good times for years to come.

Bottom line – Delightful collections in which each puzzle tantalizes and tortures until that last elusive clue can be slotted into it. Needless to say, they provide countless hours of fun and you can’t ask for better gifts for the puzzle lover(s) in your life this Christmas – or why wait that long..
