PREAMBLE:
The 2 unclued entries form the fourth and fifth words of a famous saying, the title serving as an undefined
cryptic clue for the two words read together.
All clues to grid entries have an extra letter in wordplay (in words of 3 letters or more, sometimes leaving
non-words when removed) which should be discarded before solving to arrive at the answer. In clue order, these letters
provide the first three words of the saying (3,6,2), its author (4,5) and an instruction to solvers (4,4,5,2,3,5)
enabling them to answer the bonus questions referencing items in the completed grid that are thematically
connected (each in consecutive cells in straight lines).
Clues to a few entries that are not commonly used words are given in italics. Chambers revised 13th
edition is the primary reference. The saying is available in the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations and also
easily found on the Net.
Note: extra letters in wordplay may be in provided fodder where a letter needs dropping, or in indicators
denoting an operation (eg. casting instead of casing as container indicator, leaving T extra), or from
incorrect spelling for terms clued in wordplay (eg. cat clued as pest instead of pet, leaving S extra), or
abbreviations clued with an added letter (eg could instead of cold for C, leaving U extra) and so on, but
never in link words, if any (eg. if ‘by’ needed to be used in the clue to show position, it wouldn’t be clued
as ‘boy’), etc.
