Thanks to all of you who participated in our very first Tamizh Cryptic Crossword – Mudhal Padi. A big thanks to “Kaariravu” ( Afterdark aka Shrikanth T) for all the fun and Hari Balakrishnan’s fantastic software which made this possible. Stats: The puzzle got a tremendous response with almost 800 views and visits to the puzzle page. We had 30 plus submissions, but after excluding duplicates and incomplete submissions, there were 24 valid entries. Well done to all of you who played. The puzzle was also solved in a group solving session at the 1ACross Facebook group today and it was a thoroughly enjoyable session.
No one got the full score of 76. The two people who got the highest score were Veeraraghavan and Venkatraghavan with 75 points each. Congrats to both of you. The entry that was missed by most solvers was “24.நல்ல தமிழ் நடிகன், 60 சதவிகிதம் சிறந்தவன் (3)”.

“மடு” என்றால் “பள்ளம்” என்பது மட்டுமில்லை ” நீர் நிலை” என்றும் பொருளுண்டு என்று உங்கள் புதிர் மூலம் தெரிந்து கொண்டேன்.
இப்புதிரில் ஐந்தாறு விடைகளைக் கண்டுபிடிக்கவில்லை. “தொலைபேசி, (ரகு)வரன், பசு மாடு” இதெல்லாம் நான் தவற விட்டவை.

After Vanchinathan, here has emerged a good cryptic clue writer in Tamil. The quick crosswords that appear in Tamil press are elementary though there is a huge following for them. It is time those people are given a better deal with such emerging setters. I know that it’s difficult to fit Tamil words in a grid so we need not insist on symmetry in the grid pattern, though Vanchi achieves that too consistently. I congratulate my friend Kaar Irul (a better term. than kaar iravu, I think) on his wonderful effort where he has avoided the odd kinds of directions in which words are fitted in some Tamil quickies when I get neck pain.
Thanks Rishikesh Sir. The next one that’s coming up is perfectly symmetrical. No unches and designed better to enhance the challenge. For eg in this , the word தொலைபேசி had three letters filled due to crossings.
