1ACross is happy to present “An Addagram a day”,  from “Unstoppable Kums”, exclusively for our solvers. Please read the instructions very carefully.

The grid has 5 sets of “Addagrams”, indicated by A to E at the beginning of each clue.

An Addagram set is a collection of words of lengths n, n+1, n+2 and so on, where a bigger word is an anagram of the smaller word and an additional letter.

An example of such a set is: set, lest, tales, staple, plaster. All the clues which are part of the Addagram sets have Enums hidden but will fit in one of the slots within that Addagram’s set.

In the other clues which have the correct Enum, the wordplay leading to the answer either has an extra letter  or is short of a letter (for example: the wordplay might lead to “placid” or “laid”, but the answer would be plaid and the Enum would be correctly indicated as 5).

The online interactive version can be completed and submitted by anyone who wishes to participate, on or before EOD 9th October 2019.. All those who submit entries have a chance to enter our leader board for 2019.

Annotations for the puzzle will be discussed at 1ACross on Thursday, October 10, 2019.

Happy solving.

  1. It would be nice if the presentation of the PDF version were improved for better printing.
Last month was a disaster, with even the diagram split across pages.
This month the “extras” could go beside the diagram, enabling the clues all to fit on the one sheet.

  2. Hi Max,

I agree that the PDF can be better. The simplest thing for me to do is to simply skip printing the “extras” (questions, links to file bugs, etc.) making it more likely for the clues and the grid to fit on the same page.

If anyone else has thoughts on this, please let me know!

  3. I have uploaded a new version of the Exolve software (v0.29), that tries to get the clues and the grid to fit on one page when printing or creating a PDF (it does skip printing the extras). We’ll hopefully see that work out for the next grid.
