1ACross and Hypatia are happy to present “4D”, an exclusive grid for our members and readers.

This is our last puzzle for this year and as a holiday bonus, you have some extra time to solve it too. The online interactive version can be completed and submitted by anyone who wishes to participate, on or before EOD 5th January 2019. All those who submit entries have a chance to enter our leaderboard for 2018. Here’s the current leaderboard

Annotations for the puzzle will be discussed at 1ACross on Sunday, January 6, 2019.

SOLVING INSTRUCTIONS

1. Each Across clue in this grid can be solved only after an additional instruction is applied to the wordplay component.

2. The instruction that needs to be applied to the clues can be found as the solution to 4D

3. Each half of the instruction in 4D applies to roughly half of the across clues

5. All down clues are normal cryptic clues and don’t use the additional instructions
