1ACross is happy to present “Peace” the latest offering from “Mona and Bud”. Bud Tangerina, is well known to 1ACrossers as Brian Dungate.

Bud’s passion had the perfect foil in Mona’s patience and they have put together this peerless puzzle for our participants.

Brian’s own grandfather served and died in WW1 and is among those commemorated on the Old Steine memorial in Brighton. His father also served in the war and suffered from the after effects of mustard gas poisoning and other injuries throughout his life. Mona, a talented crossword setter, is also mindful of the strong links that exist between Brighton and those Indians who served in WW1.

Thanks are also due to Ashley Smith and Dave Tilley (Tilsit) who test solved this puzzle.

The online interactive version can be completed and submitted by anyone who wishes to participate, on or before EOD 10th November 2018.. All those who submit entries have a chance to enter our leaderboard for 2018.

  1. Many of you brilliant solvers will have noted that the clue for 20A does not work. It came from an earlier version of the puzzle. The corrected clue should read

Confused police quickly dash about for a time (8)

The online version will be corrected later today. Apologies. The stalwart test puzzle test solvers are, of course, in no way to blame – just me.

  2. Thanks, Mr. Dungate. I held on to my submission as the crossings of 19down & 22 across were affected. I am not competing but desirous of completing, as always. Otherwise, I am through with this grid

How many solvers will see this comment of yours ? If the online version is to corrected , how will those who have submitted rectify? Ab=ny clarificationss from the administration ?

    1. More than 95 percent of our regular solvers are in our Facebook group 1ACross and have already been notified there. We have had a few submissions even before this change since the crossings render any other solution impossible in this case.

  3. In 22 Across, what does the :BILL SAW: signify? and why is it there ? It sort of metagrobolizes me ! and again, PETARS : as opposed to PETARD ? Can some pone clarify please?

  4. In 22 Across in this grid, what does :BILL SAW: signify and why is it there ? and again, I didn’t find in reference book, anywhere PETARS which I had to put in because of WELSH, as opposed to PETARD which is more appropriate for the clue ! This has sort of metagrobolized me ! Otherwise, I had completed this vexatious grid , though it was excellent !

    1. Petar is an alternative spelling for Petard.

Bill Saw is a reference to the Shakespearean idiom “to be hoist by one’s own Petard” from Hamlet.

Please check the group solving thread at 1ACross for this and some more insights into the puzzle – especially the questions, which you missed out on.

Other than that, you had done very well on this tough grid.
