Time for The Oracle’s Revelations …

Here’s the Solutions grid

I am sure most of you would have either known the term Sierpinski Carpet earlier or, if not, looked it up. A brief explanation for those who did not know or look: It is a plane fractal created by recursively subdividing a square into nine equal parts, blocking out the central square and carrying on. The grid used here is of the third order. Ever since I saw it, I wanted to make a crossword grid out of it and had to introduce bars in addition to blocks so that very long gridfills were avoided.

Since Christmas was round the corner, I thought of making it a themed one with these extra stuff thrown in:

  1. Highlighting or blacking out the long theme words/phrases (in the 7th and 21st rows and columns) yields a shape, identified as # (hash) by some solvers, which when filled up fully (including the central large black square) depicts a cross-a symbol for the season.
  2. “And then there was a Word’ was not a reference to the Biblical word, but literally the word “Word”, which when appended to the Cross, leads to “Crossword”.
  3. There was some mis-direction about finding directions in the puzzle. This was a reference to literal directions (North, South, East and West) which can be found in the respective directions in the finished grid. I intended to include the directions NE,NW, SW and SE in the corners, but I messed up during revision leading to one of them going West.
  4. It was also a Pangram (having all the letters of the alphabet at least once)
